COZUMEL, MEXICO
Plaza Las Gloria (2000-2004) Now the Cozumel Palace!!!!!
We have visited Cozumel, Mexico seven times each time, for 8 day
vacations. People generally ask us, why do you go
back to the same place over again? I ask them, do you stop
eating your favorite meal because you've had it one
time? It was the first time my husband and I
had been on a real tropical vacation (no business cell
phone radio yanking us back to work). We instantly fell
in love with the Mayan people, the color of the warm 85 degree
crystal clear Caribbean waters, and the easy scuba diving
experience compared to our chilly San Diego waters which were often
50 degrees and 15 foot visibility. Five years ago, I had
researched hotels endlessly to settle on the Plaza Las
Glorias, a moderate priced hotel with nearly all ocean view rooms,
refrigerators in rooms, across the street from a modern supermarket,
10 minute easy walk to town, and a boat dock downstairs for dive
boats to pick us up. I admit, the hotel bathrooms and
furniture were a showing signs of wear, but no one seemed to mind if
we wore our wetsuits through the lobby. The views
were breathtaking which made it all worthwhile.

The swimming pool was on the oceanfront with a bar where we could see
the parade of dive and fishing boats returning for the day.
Hotel guests snorkeled easily off the lime shore rock and hotel dock and there were plenty of fish. Each time we stayed,
the Bellhop, Manuel, greeted us by name as we exited form the taxi! We only stayed at a different resort one time out of
seven and we were sadly disappointed with the other.
Apparently, someone else spotted a good deal too. In late 2004, The Palace Resorts took over the Plaza Las Glorias and
now it has become an all-inclusive. The price reflects the change as well. I'm going to have to go stay at the Cozumel
Palace to find out what change has brought this mainstay property.
